I learned that I’m the kind of girl who believes in the odds of forever. I believe in building foundations and starting slow. I believe in the romantic notion of spending your life with someone who has seen you through ages and temperaments and moments of shame. I believe in keeping a commitment with someone who has seen you through numbers: birthdays, pounds lost, pounds gained, people leaving, people dying. I believe in testing friendship over time. I believe that the most naked you can get with someone is in the middle of a deep conversation and I believe in having those conversations with someone, hopefully for the rest of my lifetime. If you haven’t figured it out already, I’m one of those old-fashioned girls who actually hope to marry her best friend one day.

The past was a mistake because I didn’t know then what I know now. Because too many people imposed their truths on me. Experience has taught me that I will not be won over by grand gestures or by sweet, poetic speeches. I will be won over by banter, by silence under the stars, by comfortability and the silent promises made only by two people who have known the privilege of time.
